My Personal Pity Party

Warning: If you can't stand to listen to people wallowing in self-pity, stop reading here.

I usually dread Sunday afternoons. They've always been the most depressing day of the week for me. Sundays are the wrap-up of the weekend, and I know that Monday will bring school (in the past), work, meeting the demands of every day life (a life I love and wouldn't trade for anything). Today, though, I can't wait for afternoon. DH has been gone a lot lately and this was another weekend of his absence. He travels for MAPE, and since it's the beginning of a political season, has been busy with meetings for the DFL, as well as volunteering for the SAL on Monday nights. I admire his passion for change and his involvement in the community, but it's awfully exhausting for both of us. Murray misses his daddy, and I miss my co-pilot. The house is such a disaster today that I may just go nuts. The good news is that Craig will be home this afternoon so that he can spend time with Murray and I can get the house in shape for the week. I attempted this morning, but only got as far as a load of laundry and the kitchen cleaned up. It took me 45 minutes just to do the dishes because Murray was standing on a chair "helping" i.e. making a huge mess. I let it go because water play is a great sensory activity. Added bonus: The sooner he learns to wash dishes, the sooner I won't have to!

Anyway, this weekend Craig went ice fishing with some friends. I'm happy that he had the opportunity to relax with his buddies, but I can't help but feel a little left out. In a few weeks he will take his annual trip to WCHA. Again, I'm glad for his sake that he has these opportunities; we just miss him (and I do realize that he's working on most of his trips). The next two weekends he will be home, and we're looking forward to family time (I hope to get a couple of hours of "me" time in as well).

There you have it - my pity party for the day. I realize there are much worse things to complain about, but it's my blog, my place to vent, and this is my outlet. Does anyone else out there have an absentee spouse? How do you deal?

I think (I HOPE) that I have solved the mystery of Murray's sudden change in sleep habits. I do believe he's getting his molars - is it too late for that - because I saw what looked like a new tooth way in the back popping through. I think we'll try some Tylenol before bed tonight.

Pray for the Chileans.
I am off to bed soon, but I wanted to share a few things first. I would have posted sooner, however, I finally have Murray in bed (and sleeping).

Last night, I attended a meeting for Flynn's benefit. I was bowled over by the amount of work co-workers, friends and family who are contributing. I am currently seeking anyone who can donate something for the silent auction or raffle. The benefit will be held on September 20 from 4-8pm. For security, I won't disclose the location, but please contact me if you would like to attend or donate.

Another horrendous bedtime. I know it's molars and one eye tooth, but this is so sad for Murray. He can't sleep through the night and we are up with him every hour after about 3am. If any of you can't sleep, call me, we'll catch up because no doubt I will be awake anyway!

I'm off to bed now. Yawn. . .God bless.

The "Eye" of the Tiger

They've finally popped. Murray's eye teeth, that is. Unless my memory fails me, I am pretty sure this was the worst teething experience since the first tooth. He's been as cranky a tiger with a thorn in his paw for several weeks, not to mention the fact that we haven't slept through the night in quite some time. When I picked Murray up from daycare yesterday, Linsay informed me that the first one was through, and the second one was almost there. This morning I checked his mouth again, and sure enough, there was eye tooth number 2. The best news of all is that he slept until 7:15 this morning - no midnight interruptions. He is also a much happier little boy, which makes for much happier parents.

Seems as though summer has arrived. That's the good news. The bad news is that the weekend is supposed to be humid and stormy. I suppose it's best not to complain and enjoy the beautiful weather while it lasts.

Things That Go Bump in the Night

Murray finally slept through most of the night last night (we've been up a lot lately due to teething). I had to lay on the floor next to his crib around midnight after a dose of Tylenol, and he was out. I was pumped to get some extra sleep. He's been waking every hour on the hour for the past few days and with DH 0n the road, I had to suck it up on my own. I sleepily crawled back into my cozy bed. Just as I hit full REM, the cat decides to be sick. Off I trudged to clean up. Again, I climbed back into our now, ever-so-cozy bed, only to be woken an hour later by Rudy, our resident security guard. He was going bananas at the obnoxious neighbors. Round three: I calmed Rudy, threw myself back into what I now considered a bed made in heaven and wearily drifted off to sleep. Murray slept until a blessed hour of 6:30am. I pulled him into bed with me to have our morning snuggle before we get going for the day. Suddenly, BOOM! I threw myself over Murray, thinking that we had an intruder in our bedroom with a very loud shotgun. Seconds later, to my relief, I realized that the power was out. Murray's eyes were as large as saucers, and if dogs could cry, I think Rudy would have been sobbing. Nala is getting too deaf to hear even the atom bomb, so I wasn't surprised when she didn't move. I called MPS and they were here within 30 minutes. A transformer had exploded, and the dumb thing is pretty much in my back yard. I am beginning to feel as though I have a newborn again, what with my lack of a decent rest.

May you all sleep peacefully tonight (and get a chuckle out of another escapade in the Beckerleg household).

Cabin Fever

Cabin Fever has hit our household full force. I miss going to the Y, and I even miss sandbagging. although I'm so thankful that the river has crested for the time being. I was stricken with the stomach flu yesterday, so all of the household tasks I wanted to accomplish were put on hold. With all of our belongings on the main floor, 3 large dogs, a cat and a baby, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. I can't complain though - this too shall pass. There are worst things in life. At least we are healthy and safe in our home.

Flynn had to have a tracheotomy tube put in yesterday. This was not great news, as she is unable to speak. Our hope is that this will solve her lung troubles so that she can move to Denver very soon. It hurts to not be with them.

Despite the zoo in our home, our temporary addition, Millie (the Murray's dog) has been a joy. She is such a good girl and love to cuddle, and of course, rough house with Rudy, which he desperately needs. He's an active dog, where Nala is not (can't blame her - she's 10 years old), so this extra activity is welcomed. We are more than happy to keep her as long as necessary. They are the best of friends. We've had quite a few laughs with her around.

Murray is teething again (upper molars this time), so we've had a few sleepless nights. Craig finally put the futon in Murray's room last night and slept near him so that we could all rest. It's very uncomfortable - no wonder Casey retreated to his own home! :)

Craig is out snow blowing, since the snow has finally taken a break. I think we're supposed to get more tonight, but as least some of it will be cleared.

I think I'll start a puzzle. I'm bored to tears. Stay warm and dry.

The Snow Patrol

It took Craig and our neighbor (who I have dubbed "the snow patrol") a little over 2 hours to remove the snow from the driveways and sidewalks in front of our homes. Murray was mesmerized - he watched them for almost 30 minutes. I was just grateful to be cozy in the house.

I refuse to let this weather get me down. We're in the second week of March, and it should be nice this weekend. Although we'll probably have flooding to deal with, I'll cross that bridge (if it's not under water) when I come to it.

I'm afraid I'm not feeling very insighful today. I think it's the weather. I imagine there are others who are feeling similar. I'm not feeling blue, just blah. The storm through a loop into getting back to routine; now that it's Thursday already, we'll have to start all over on Monday. Murray was not happy to be at daycare today, but he'll readjust in no time. It doesn't help that he's teething like crazy

We plan to watch the Moorhead Spuds tonight on tv - they are at state tournaments in MPLS. Go Spuds! Other than that, we're looking forward to an uneventful weekend.

Eureka!

Note: edited for missed words and other conundrums.

The morning started out a bit rocky. When I opened my eyes, I realized it was because the sun won the race to wake. We were still sleeping at 7:45! Yikes! Craig is ill, so I slept on the couch again last night. Murray was up on and off through the night teething, hence, an exhausting night. Anyway, Craig fed and dressed Murray while I prepared myself for the day. We arrived at daycare only about 20 minutes late, but on the way home I had to wait for a very slow train. Already late, and I still had to switch cars because I thought I had appointments this afternoon, so Craig would have to pick up Murray. Ironically, I found my long lost planner in the Grand Am, only to realize that all of my appointments are tomorrow and Friday! It all worked out well in the end or I would have been running around for no reason. I'm just glad to have my planner back. I was lost without it.

A quick clip of Murray - I believe it was recorded last weekend. Last night he tired of walking back and forth between Craig and I and toddled on his own all over the house. He is so funny. I feel for the poor dogs, because he doesn't care if they are in his way. He climbs over them, steps on their tails, and uses them for "support" while pulling their hair. We are working on the concept of gentle. They never complain, just silently put up with his antics, with the occasional "sigh", as if they are asking us why we ever brought this child into "their" home.

Another Lesson in Parenting

In my attempt to use our new scanner at work, I scanned in some photos of Murray, but they were too small to post here. Apparently I need to read the manual.
Valentine's day is probably my least favorite holiday. I feel that we should celebrate our love for our loved ones 365 days a year, not just on February 14. Hence, Craig and I (as usual) did not make plans and decided against getting each other gifts. Yesterday, our good friends, M & D, called to invite us for dinner at Norman's on Saturday. We delightfully accepted. I've been aching to try Norman's since it opened and finally will get the chance. It will be a fun evening with friends, even though I'm not a fan of this particular "Hallmark Holiday".
Being it is the day before V-Day, Murray was supposed to dress in red today. I completely forgot to tell Craig, so when we arrived this morning, he was the only kid in the entire center (including teachers) who wasn't wearing red or pink. Worst of all, he was wearing orange! I just received a text from one of his teachers. They checked his extra clothes bin and found a red shirt. At least he isn't the strange kid in class.
Murray's signing is going very well. He know the signs for: more (his favorite), please, thank you, all done, and milk. He even will use them together, such as "milk please". We think he probably knows more signs than I mentioned, the problem is, Craig and I aren't as schooled in ASL as he is! He's teaching us. This comes as no surprise, since he's been teaching us many parenting lessons from the moment he arrived.
Speaking of parenting lessons, you would think that I would have the teething thing down by now. I couldn't figure out why Murray has been extra sleepy, waking at odd hours and all around cranky lately. This morning during a rather mild tantrum, I looked in his mouth and there it was; the cause of the recent moodiness. A rather large back tooth has emerged through very swollen gums. I should have know that he'd eventually get more than four teeth!
Congrats to the Lovejoy's, who received their sentencia and hope to be home by Wednesday. We are so excited to have our friends back and meet their new daughter, Mariana. We love you and miss you!

Something to be Said for Winter

Though you can't tell (due to Murray being so bundled up), he loved his first sledding experience. He giggled and laughed, even when Daddy tipped him over in a snow bank. The dogs enjoyed being able to run around too. I guess there a few good things about winter after all. As the saying goes, having a child changes everything (even my immense dislike of winter).

Murray is getting another tooth on top, so that means mornings of upset at 4:00am. We have no idea why he wakes at the same time every morning, but like clockwork, the soothing begins in the wee hours. We take turns getting out of bed and comforting him back into a restless slumber. I have 2 theories about this: One, it's teething, or two, it's due to the fact that he's only napping for an hour a day in his new room at daycare, so he's actually over tired. My guess is the latter rather than the former, because since we've been home with him and letting him nap longer, he's been sleeping until at least 6:30am.

I suppose as soon as we get him adjusted to this new routine, everything will change again. :)

Teeth

Today I remembered the USB cord, but forgot the camera - go figure. I will get Murray's birthday pics up soon.

Murray had his one year check up yesterday. He weighs 22.9 lbs, in the 50th percentile (time to go car seat shopping), and is not very tall. In fact, they want to see him again in 3 months to assure that his growth is fine. Dr. G. isn't too concerned, since genetics play a factor, and Craig and I are both pretty short.

The top two teeth came in yesterday, finally. I was wondering when it was going to happen; at his nine month check up, Dr. T. said any day. Guess he was off a bit. Oh well, now they are in and life is swell.

On Friday night, I am going to see the movie "Twilight", the first of the Stephanie Meyer series. I am truly excited; I love this series.

I had a very stressful day at work today, so I'm off to bed. We're almost to Friday! By the way, I'm already cranky about the cold weather. It's going to be a LONG winter.

On to the Weekend

What can I say about this week? I'm feeling better emotionally, most of the time. I'm excited about the progress I've made and the support that I have. I hope to be discharged next Friday, which is exciting, but nerve racking at the same time. I've really been working hard at practicing what I've learned, so I think that I can do this. Upon discharge, I will continue appointments with a psychiatrist and a psycho-therapist, so it's not like I'm completely on my own. This is comforting. I'll continue to keep you posted. Someday I hope that I can write in detail about my experiences, because they have been life changing. I'm just not ready yet.

Murray spiked a temp yesterday of 101.6, but a little Tylenol and some extra TLC brought it down and he's back to "almost" normal. Tired, a bit cranky, but I suspect it's the cold combined with teething.

We are celebrating Craig's boss's retirement party tomorrow, and his wife has asked me to help prepare. I'm looking forward to this-it's a chance to be creative and a such a wonderful social event. I am pretty honored that she asked. She has become a close friend; I value her very much.

Happy Friday!

Tooth Number 2

It's here - Murrays second bottom tooth, that is. Actually I was a bit surprised to find it yesterday. This time around went smoothly and we had virtually no sign that it would be coming through. I may be kidding myself, but I'm going to take this as a good omen for the next 18.

Yesterday afternoon we had a couple of hours to spare while our realtor held an open house. We visited Buffalo State Park. What a neat little day trip! Only a 15 minute drive, and there is a great swimming area and lots of trails to explore. And if you have the State Park sticker, it's free!

I'm looking forward to a short week of very hot weather. We're leaving for the lake on Thursday morning, if all goes as planned. It's hard to believe that the Fourth of July is already upon us. It always feels like summer is waning after Independence Day passes. Cliche, I know, but time just goes so fast.

Pop

It finally popped. Murray's first tooth, that is. It's so cute. It's this tiny (but sharp) little white thing poking out of his bottom gum. This explains why daycare couldn't comfort him on Monday until they gave him some Tylenol. What a relief that the first one is over - now we know what to watch for. He is back to sleeping through the night again, which thrills us. I think the tooth was waking him. This morning he slept until 6:30, only when we checked on him at five, he had flipped to his tummy. When he woke up, he looked around as if to say, "how the heck did I end up here?"

Craig has to head out of town again today, but at least he'll be back tonight. Tomorrow we are heading to the lake and are looking forward to relaxing, even if the weather is miserable. After all of the work we've done on the house (I have more to finish tonight) we are ready for a break. Craig still has to paint the front eaves on Sunday afternoon, but that shouldn't take too long. We are both afraid of heights, but since his life insurance policy is bigger than mine, he gets the task (I am just kidding).

Let's hope the weather holds out. We all deserve summer!
