When Murray was a baby, toys were pretty easy to manage. His first Christmas we didn't purchase anything for him because he was only 6 weeks old. The second Christmas rolled around and we kept our buying to a minimum. This year, his third Christmas, I have to admit that I went a little crazy. Not only did I go nuts spoiling him, but so did his aunts and uncles, grandparents, great-grandparents as well as his great aunts and uncles (I prefer to refer to the greats as regular grandparents and aunts and uncles, but for posterity, I included the great because, well, they are great). Anyway, I spent a good portion of a day last week packing up toys that he no longer uses and/or has forgotten. What I realized is that the older he gets, the more little parts and pieces there are to keep track of. I feel that I spend a ton of time running around making sure that things like the Handy Manny tools are in their tool box, the Lego's are in correct bin, the puzzle pieces match up and the seventy-nine Matchbox cars are out from under foot. Don't get me wrong, we are so pleased to be as blessed as we are. It's just that baby toys are much easier to keep track of than a toddler's. Murray is super at helping to pick up (thanks to Lyn) but I stocked up on cheap see-through boxes today and with the help of Maggie's label maker I plan to get a bit more organized.
I don't think Murray received a gift this year that he didn't absolutely love. Wait, I take that back. Santa brought him a new outfit and the second he opened it, he threw the clothes aside and was digging through the box looking for more toys. Needless to say, we're going to have to reign him in. With his birthday and Christmas so close, he thinks Santa should drop off some gifts every weekend. So, while I will be sending out thank-you notes (plan for those to arrive with the Beckerleg Christmas card), we are very appreciative, especially Murray.
We had a fantastic time with my dad, Miss Maddie, Maggie and her new beau, "Q". It was just awesome to be together and of course my dad (the real live Santa) made our belated Christmas just perfect. We spent a couple of hours with my Aunt Sue, Uncle Pat, Flynn and Casey yesterday. I haven't laughed so hard in a very long time. I am so glad to have them close.
I cried when my Dad left this morning, and we all miss Maddie. Although it is quite a bit less chaotic around here without a four-month old puppy. Even so, I'd welcome her any day, any time. For being so young, Dad is doing a fantastic job of training her and she's really a sweetheart. I know that Rudy misses her; he finally had someone to play with which they did almost non-stop.
Last but not least, Craig and I didn't have a lot of time to visit with my Dad or spend time with Murray. Murray spent two days hauling my dad around the house from toys to meals, to playing and singing songs. My dad has always had a giant heart when it comes to children, but when it comes to his grandson, well, I guess even a reformed Grinch couldn't compete with my dad. Murray has him completely wrapped around his finger and they have a pretty cool bond. My cup runneth over.
Good night, friends.

The guest of honor (aren't these 2 gorgeous women?):

We had so many silent auction items that we almost didn't have room for people to sit. Good thing we had a tent set up outside!

The next step is our grand prize raffle. For $10.00, you could win the following:

The benefit was a HUGE success. Over 600 people attended and every single one of the 250 silent auction items sold (not to mention the many raffles). The outpouring of the community was amazing and I'm so grateful. Thank you to all of you who donated silent auction items, attended the benefit, made a monetary donation and who have kept Flynn and her family in their prayers. This is the John Deere pedal tractor that I bid on and won for Murray. It even comes with a front end loader and a trailer! He just loves it.

The next step is our grand prize raffle. For $10.00, you could win the following:
4 front row tickets to the Vikings vs. Phoenix game in Phoenix
Airfare for 4
2 nights lodging (2 rooms)
This is an awesome prize - if you would like to purchase a ticket, please contact me. They went on sale yesterday and are selling like hotcakes!!!
P is For Peace Garden
I think we have everything set for the benefit. It's been an awesome journey and I am so excited to raise the funds that the Murray family needs. Every penny will go towards Flynn's fund. The benefit should be a ton of fun; great food, wonderful people. and a ton of raffles and silent auction items. Please join us on Sunday!
Murray is a very silly boy. I've been wanting to tape videos of him, but our camcorder is missing. Plus, Criag keeps forgetting to bring the memory card home from work. We've missed a month of memories - I'm so sad. I can't wait to post pictures of him. He continues to learn new signs and words and his dancing is something that would make a group of the saddest people in the world laugh. I will post a video soon!
This afternoon we are taking Murray to the homecoming parade at MSUM. The last parade we attended he fell asleep, so we're hoping he will really enjoy this one.
Last night, my friend Roxane came over to visit and sign her book (for the benefit) "P is for Peace Garden". We had an awesome chat and are looking forward to many more. She is so amazing. Roxane is a mother of 5, a fantastic wife, mother of five, author and she sings too! Goodness, I'm lucky to have such a special friend who also has become my mentor. se
Hope to see you on Sunday!
Blessings,
Ree

Be There or Be Square
Just a quick update today. If you are free on Sunday, September 20, please join us at the American Legion in Moorhead for a spaghetti dinner, silent auction and live raffles for Flynn Murray from 4pm-8pm. It's going to be a blast and you can even get your Christmas shopping done early. You will be truly amazed at the items we've gathered. Hope to see you there!
Dreaming of Sleep
We survived night number one of the "crying it out method". Murray woke at 4:00am like clockwork. His cries started out as whines, which soon turned to sobbing, but Craig and I shut our door, put pillows over our heads and ignored him. An excruciating hour and a half later, Murray had fallen asleep and slept peacefully until 7:30 this morning. I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride - tonight should be a bit shorter stint, and the next night even shorter, and so on. We can only hope. It's so sad though; his cries are hard on the heart. We look forward to a happy ending.
I'm home today with Murray, as our daycare is closed this week so "Linny" could have a vacation. I am so excited to have a mama and Murray day. We'll go play with the twins this afternoon and then I'm off to a benefit meeting this evening.
Please keep Flynn and her family in your thoughts and prayers as she continues her journey of rehabilitation and recovery.

Marie's Mission
I know that I just posted on this subject yesterday, but felt I needed to reiterate. Anyone who follows my blog knows that my cousin, Flynn Murray was in a serious car accident in March. She arrived in Moorhead last week after a lengthy stay at Craig Hospital in Denver. We are having a benefit and silent auction on September 20 at the Moorhead American Legion from 4-8pm. My mission is to collect as many donations as possible for her cause. Her parent's home has been modified to suit Flynn's needs, and there are many travel, medical, and various other expenses that are not covered by insurance. If there is anyone out there who is willing to donate or volunteer, the Murray family would be honored. For more information, please contact me via my blog, or at beckerleg@hotmail.com
Flynn is a woman of great strength and tenacity, and if you know her, you are lucky indeed. She is loved by many, and your support is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I am off to bed soon, but I wanted to share a few things first. I would have posted sooner, however, I finally have Murray in bed (and sleeping).
Last night, I attended a meeting for Flynn's benefit. I was bowled over by the amount of work co-workers, friends and family who are contributing. I am currently seeking anyone who can donate something for the silent auction or raffle. The benefit will be held on September 20 from 4-8pm. For security, I won't disclose the location, but please contact me if you would like to attend or donate.
Another horrendous bedtime. I know it's molars and one eye tooth, but this is so sad for Murray. He can't sleep through the night and we are up with him every hour after about 3am. If any of you can't sleep, call me, we'll catch up because no doubt I will be awake anyway!
I'm off to bed now. Yawn. . .God bless.

Lazy Days
Relaxation was the name of the game this weekend. We decided to stay home, which is rare on weekends in the summer. We missed the lake, but it was fun to enjoy our home.

Thursday evening was the highlight of our week. Flynn arrived in Moorhead, just released from Craig hospital. She will continue physical therapy in Moorhead, and eventually, I do believe she will move back to Bozeman to finish her degree. We are SO unbelievably proud of her and are thrilled to have her just across town again.
On that note, on Sunday, September 20, there will be a supper and silent auction for Flynn. The benefit will be held at the Moorhead American Legion from 4pm-8pm. The goal is to show support for Flynn and her family, as well as to raise funds to help cover not only medical expenses, but the cost of modifying their home to suit Flynn's needs. I am asking for everyone to join us, as well as donate any silent auction items you can contribute. All will be extremely appreciated by the Murray family and extended relatives, friends and those who care about Flynn. There is also a fund set up at State Bank and Trust for Flynn Murray. Not only will you help a wonderful person and family, you will have a blast at the benefit! We Murray's are pretty fun people.
Yesterday we attended a birthday party for our good friend, Kristine. We had a fantastic time. We were so happy to share her special occasion!
We attended Mass this morning, and were informed by Msgr. Mike Foltz that his mother has a terminal disease. Our hearts and prayers are with his mother and family. God speed.

Murray fell asleep in his highchair today. This is the first time in his 22 months of life that he has chosen sleep over food. He refused to get out of his chair for his crib, and wouldn't let pooh bear or his blanket go anywhere. So we left him until he was completely out and then moved him. I'm sure most parents have a picture like this of their own children, but I couldn't help but share ours.
Denver Adventures
On June 26th my dad, sister and I hopped on a plane to visit Flynn at Craig Hospital in Denver, CO. My dad has never flown and tends to be a nervous nellie, so I knew it would be interesting. He dad a fantastic job and had so much fun that he's already planning a trip again next year, destination undecided (as long as we can fly). The three of us bonded like we haven't in a long time. It was wonderful father-daughter time. Plus, our cousin from Minneapolis joined us. She is a riot and made the trip even more fun.
The best part though, was getting to see Flynn and Pat. We were delayed due to storms, so by the time we arrived at our hotel, it was too late to visit. We were all exhausted and crashed so that we could be refreshed for our adventures on Saturday.
Craig Hospital is an amazing facility. It's difficult to even describe until you see it. Flynn has a suite; complete with a microwave, refrigerator, tv, dvd, computer, etc. She has decorated it beautifully - it's very cheery and bright.
As for Flynn herself, she was the same old Flynn. Her beautiful smile that always lights up a room, her positive attitude and strong work ethic were all still there, despite her situation. Our outing that day consisted of a visit to the Denver Zoo. One of her very good friends was being discharged the following Tuesday, so it was his day to decide what he wanted to do. It was a fabulous choice. The Denver Zoo is one of the most beautiful zoos I have yet to visit. We experienced public transportation, which Flynn has become an expert on navigating. I could go on and on, but I just can't find the words to describe what an amazing person she is as well as her family. It was a joy to spend time with her and Pat - an experience I will hold near and dear in my heart forever.
An update since our trip: Flynn was able to have her halo cast removed! This is a wonderful step forward in her recovery. We are all praying for the best. Flynn, we can't wait for you to come "home". God Speed.

Sad News
We had what I would call a rough-and-tumble -topsy-turvey - upside - down week.
Craig and I and Murray were swing-set shopping early Saturday morning when we received one of those phone calls that you dread getting: Craig's grandemother had suffered a massive stroke and had been taken via ambulance to Meritcare. Unsure of the prognosis, we left for the hospital. Sadly, Evelyn passed away late that morning. She was quite the lady and will be greatly missed by many.
It was very difficult to be cheerful on Sunday. We went out for lunch but our celebration of Father's Day was half-hearted. We were still in a state of shock and grieving as well. I ended up with an enormous headache so we took a long, much-needed family nap after our outing. It was early to bed for all of us, despite the snooze.
I still have a headache, although now it's more like a dull, nagging pain. This is day three and frankly, I'm quite tired of it. I did finally make it to work today, but not until almost 10:30. It's wearing me down!
I leave for Denver on Friday to finally see Flynn after her accident. She was supposed to have the halo cast removed last week, but the doctors decided that it must stay on for another month or so. This was very disappointing news, but we are still very excited to spend some time with her and learn about her "bubble", as she calls Craig Hospital.
I am off to visit the twins. More soon.

I've Got Sunshine . . .
It hasn't been a smooth ride this week, but a country song on the radio this morning reminded me that when things seem to be falling apart, we have to remember that this is our life, and we have to live it. It was just what I needed to hear at that very moment in time.
There is always a bright side of things and I'm lucky enough to have many. The first is that Flynn is making so much progress! She and her family had their first intake conference on Monday at Craig Hospital. The most exciting news is that she can speak again. I can't imagine the frustration one must feel to not be able to project one's feelings/thoughts/needs, etc. To read more about her eventful day, check out her page here. I'm not sure I can explain everything as eloquently as her dad.
Yet another bright side is that we are preparing for my sister, Maggie's, college graduation. As of May 15, she will have a BSA in Paralegal Studies. We are incredibly proud of her. Her college experience hasn't been typical. Far from it, actually. She struggled with personal issues at first (as many of us do). She flew over those hurdles, and this amazing woman juggled a full load of classes and a full time job, not to mention the daily bumps in the road that life tends to hand us. When we found out the our beloved mother was ill, Mags didn't slow down. She took care of mom and kept up work and school - full speed ahead. When mom passed away, Mags was right there planning the funeral and handling the estate. I honestly don't know how she did it, but I will say this: There is not an angel in heaven who is bursting with pride more than our mother. Mags is truly an inspiration.
The sun is shining and the water is receding. Life is good.

Random Monday Mutterings
A Blessed Easter to all. I hope it was a day filled with hope and comfort and that you were able to celebrate Christ rising with family and friends.
We had a very nice dinner with Maggie, Steph and Scarlett on Saturday evening. It was filled with activity and laughter. I was looking forward to Mass, Mari's baptism, and a visit with the Fink's on Sunday, but woke up with a terrible sore throat. I was stuck in bed all day. I went to the walk in this morning, as I'm still not feeling better and am currently waiting for test results.
On a brighter note, the latest on Flynn is that she is using her hands while talking. This is incredible news, and I know with all my heart that there will be many more miracles to come.
Murray has some new bruises, but that's nothing new. When he took those first steps and gradually began walking/running, I was terrified with every step. Now, I just figure that bumps and bruises are inevitable and a few falls aren't going to scar him for life. It's still sad when he hurts himself, but the "mom worry" has a lessened a bit.
Well, I'm off to put more indents in my couch. Best to get some rest so I can be back to normal ASAP. Have a great Monday.

Sixteen Months and Counting
I am happy to report that Murray's check up went very well. Dr. G. said that he looks great, and isn't concerned about his speech. We felt as though he should be using more words, but after consulting with the doctor, we were relieved to discover that he is right on track. Eight to ten words at 16 months is what they look for, and he speaks 10 that we can understand. These words, of course are in toddler tongue, so the word "thank you" comes out sounding more like "shank oooo" and "up" sounds like "bap". He did lose a bit of weight which came as a huge surprise. He eats us out of house and home! Apparently, weight loss at this age is normal too because he is so active.
I was able to speak with my Uncle Pat last night. We had a wonderful conversation; he is finishing up making arrangements in Moorhead and will head back to Denver to be with Flynn and Sue this weekend. Speaking of Flynn, I forgot to post that she arrived safely at Craig hospital (who treated Christopher Reeves) on Tuesday. She has a lot of hard work ahead, but we are all happy that she can begin working on those goals. Thanks again for your continued prayers.
Have a blessed Holy week.

Cabin Fever
Cabin Fever has hit our household full force. I miss going to the Y, and I even miss sandbagging. although I'm so thankful that the river has crested for the time being. I was stricken with the stomach flu yesterday, so all of the household tasks I wanted to accomplish were put on hold. With all of our belongings on the main floor, 3 large dogs, a cat and a baby, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. I can't complain though - this too shall pass. There are worst things in life. At least we are healthy and safe in our home.
Flynn had to have a tracheotomy tube put in yesterday. This was not great news, as she is unable to speak. Our hope is that this will solve her lung troubles so that she can move to Denver very soon. It hurts to not be with them.
Despite the zoo in our home, our temporary addition, Millie (the Murray's dog) has been a joy. She is such a good girl and love to cuddle, and of course, rough house with Rudy, which he desperately needs. He's an active dog, where Nala is not (can't blame her - she's 10 years old), so this extra activity is welcomed. We are more than happy to keep her as long as necessary. They are the best of friends. We've had quite a few laughs with her around.
Murray is teething again (upper molars this time), so we've had a few sleepless nights. Craig finally put the futon in Murray's room last night and slept near him so that we could all rest. It's very uncomfortable - no wonder Casey retreated to his own home! :)
Craig is out snow blowing, since the snow has finally taken a break. I think we're supposed to get more tonight, but as least some of it will be cleared.
I think I'll start a puzzle. I'm bored to tears. Stay warm and dry.
